Challenges & Opportunities: Christine Su of PastureMap

Christine Su’s plunge into AgTech is a good case study of how a problem can offer an opportunity. A decade ago, Su, 30, was an undergrad at Stanford when she was hit with a barrage of food allergies.

“I shopped at local farmers’ markets and looked for cheese that wouldn’t make me break out in hives,” Su said. “I wanted to eat cheese, and that was my entryway into sustainable food.”

Su, raised in Cupertino, says her “love affair with farmers and ranchers” began with a curiosity on how her food was produced.

After college she went to Hong Kong where she worked as a business analyst at McKinsey and then as associate at private equity giant Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. Her travels throughout the Asia-Pacific sparked her passion for food production even more.

In Shanghai, Su said, she found it “really hard to eat the way we eat in California. I was breaking out in hives due to my food allergies, while running factories in Malaysia and traveling from Shanghai to 60 cities around China to set up new retail stores.”
