Farms to Incubators presents at Techonomy
From Farms to Incubators founder Amy Wu spoke about the important role women innovators are playing in the burgeoning agtech sector at Techonomy’s annual retreat in Half Moon Bay in November. The retreat draws high level CEOs, innovators and entrepreneurs from across the country. Some of this year’s speakers included Marissa Mayer the former Yahoo! CEO, John Chen the CEO of Blackberry and former Cisco CEO John Chambers.
During her presentation Wu said: “Some of the world’s biggest challenges now are in agriculture. These include climate change, weather fluctuations, severe labor shortage, rising cost of farming and limited land and water supply… About 90 miles south of us is the Salinas Valley, also known as the salad bowl of the world, where ag is a $9 billion industry and where 80% of leafy greens in the U.S. are grown. I became interested in this topic when I was a newspaper reporter in Salinas in 2016, and my beat was agriculture. As a woman and a person of color I became fascinated with the stories of minorities and women, who are transforming the agriculture scene with technology.”
